Global carbon emissions are still tracking above the worst-case scenario by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2019).

Current emission-reduction commitments by the major carbon-emitting countries would see the world warm another 1.5 to 2 degrees C this century (2.5 to 3 degrees above preindustrial levels).

This is three years after 195 countries ratified the Paris Accord. If this scenario unfolds, sensitive marine ecosystems and dependent people and economies are predicted to undergo changes and losses unprecedented in modern human history.

Two key goals at ES5 are to:

  1. Prevent or lessen environmental and human disaster, and
  2. Help ecosystems and people adapt proactively to make the best of a bad situation.

To achieve this, we've developed a set of navigational tools for adapting effectively to climate change.

We do this by optimising solutions within the five key aspects that define ES5: environment, ecology, economy, people and cultures.

The options we develop with you consist of a set of alternative adaptive pathways that consider, quantitatively, the likely benefits, risks and costs.

We help you build climate resilience in the right way and in the right place.

Using modelling, we illustrate what can be achieved and what opportunities you have for action in a rapidly closing window—using the resources you have available.
